[Sydney] Aria Awards 2008

It’s a Sunday afternoon, I’m wearing a nice shirt and I still have pants on. What gives? It must be Aria time again. Ahhh the music industries night of nights, limitless free booze, 3rd rate celebrities, music type snobs and me THE DRUNKEST MAN IN THE UNIVERSE! (cue triumphant music). Aahaha yes, they have invited me back again, for the 4th year in a row. When will they learn?

But I guess if spanking Guy Sebastian during an interview, running around shirtless and eventually being physically escorted out of the venue for stealing a bottle off ‘free’ booze doesn’t get your next year pass revoked, I don’t know what will.

The night starts with the awkward walk down the red carpet where prepubescent girls take photos and try to work out if you’re famous or not. I wish I had the courage to sign an autograph, but alas booze awaits at the end of the runway, so the courage will come later.

My table was in the middle of Children Collide, Dash & Will and the Channel V guys’ tables. Unfortunately I didn’t notice the Channel V table and was overheard slagging Ruby Rose for only being notable for the fact she hooked up with one of The Veronicas and then following up with “Does anybody even watch that stupid channel?” Haha whoops, sorry Yumi. The Children Collide guys on the other hand were awesome. A bunch of sweet dudes, made even cooler by their extreme talents.

Hamish and Andy provided a few laughs as hosts, particularly in the intro of the show. To out-shine James Mathison they opened from a lighting beam on the roof. They then abseiled down to the stage where there was a planned problem that sent Andy smashing through the floor. It was reminiscent of Owen Hart’s death where he plummeted from the roof during a WWF match. Unfortunately Andy survived and Megan Gail remains spoken for. Sam Sparrow fell, Pink road a mower and slid down a slide, The Presets blew everyone away with their thundering bass and an Italian girl “stole” all the awards, who is this Gabriella Cilmi?

Here is the full list of winners.

Unfortunately for this review my behavior remained relatively tame, embarrassing myself only a few times and staying fully clothed. I’m not sure why this was, I brought with me all the right ingredients for mischief, the only thing lacking was the vibe. I hope nobody noticed, or I might not get invited back again.
