Benicio Del Toro is playing the political cult icon Che Guevara in two new films by director Steven Soderbergh, ‘The Argentine’ and ‘Guerilla‘. These films were recently presented at Cannes Film Festival under the one name ‘Che’.
Just when I thought there were enough films made about Che Guevara they bring out two more. However, I do have a feeling that these films are going to be a bit darker than previous films made about Che.
In the first film ‘The Argentine’ Ernesto (Che) is the young Argentinean freedom fighter who shared the ideas of Fidel Castro in defeating Fulgencio Batista in Cuba.
In the second film ‘Guerilla’ Che takes the revolution to Africa and South America eventually leading to his assassination led by the CIA in Bolivia.
A bit of Che trivia:
- Gael García Bernal also played Che Guevara in two films ‘Motorcycle Diaries’ (2004) and ‘Fidel’ (2002).
- Che has three children living in Cuba; the eldest Aleida Guevara has followed her father’s footsteps and works as a doctor and political speaker in Havana.
- The Cuban man who assassinated Che is still alive but apparently never leaves his home in Florida from fear of being mobbed and killed by Cuban immigrants living in America.
- Alberto Kordas’s photograph of Che is the most reproduced image in the world.
