Just an hour and a half north of Melbourne lies the sleepy country town of Warburton. It’s a place populated relatively recently by, according to a local cafe proprietor; ‘artists living only off the skin of their teeth and wits’. Perhaps this is true, but the day Jester and myself visited the town most of the galleries and cafes were closed with signs claiming typically rural excuses such as emergencies, stampedes and closed on Mondays. The most devastating of which being the local op-shop purported to be the ‘finest in Victoria,’ so if you’re heading out keep in mind, it’s closed on Mondays.
The environment and surrounding views really are pristine and gorgeous in this part of town. If you ever wanted to strike fear into the heart of your city doctor by claiming to drink water straight from the Yarra this is the only place I’d recommend doing so. The water is clean, clear and fresh and tastes far better than Melbourne’s chlorinated tap water.
After Jester completed his biannual pilgrimage to the Warburton Wellbeing shop to pick up $150 worth of the finest hand made soap, we headed further north to Marysville to to check out the reportedly famous Bruno’s Sculpture Garden. Bruno travels the world finding inspiration from the characters and stories he encounters along the way and comes home to create some twisted clay sculptures out in the rainforest. Right on!
Warburton and Marysville, just a hour or so from Melbourne but worlds apart, I dig it.
