Being new to The England, I was desperately trying to find a place outside of London with a huge graffiti following. Luckily enough I planted my ass (ed: she means buttocks) in Bristol, hometown of the notorious Banksy.
What I didn’t realise was how deep the graffiti culture runs in Bristol. Deep enough to fill a massive hardback book with 25 years of graffiti in Bristol alone. The launch of the book is on tomorrow night, 4th of Dec at ARNOLFINI, 16 Narrow Quay, Bristol BS1 4QA, starting from 7pm.
After talking to two of the artists that are featured in Children of the Can, I was suprised to find that the graffiti culture here is very laid back with turf wars and rival gangs being swapped for encouragement and respecting one another. I think we could all learn a thing or two from these Bristolites (ed: Bristilians? Bristonese? Bristons?) who seem to have the right idea when it comes to being an artist rather than a thug.
Lucky for me I had the opportunity to take a sneak peek and it is absolutely amazing! The book is released tomorrow night (hence the book launch) so UK-based WMSG lovers should keep their eyes peeled at stores. As for the rest of you around the world, I recommend you browse the net for this book.
