Yo children of the happy hip-hop generation! Last week Common released his new album Universal Mind Control. Produced by the brilliant Neptunes with Cee-Lo, Pharell Williams and Kanye West as side artists, this album is one of the best new school hip-hop releases of 2008. It’s experimental and in many ways and gives Common and hip-hop itself a whole new dimension. Tip-Top Baby.

I was told not to waste my time listening to this album because, I repeat: ‘it sucks to the max.’ I already knew that Common had found a new producer for this album. No more Kanye. But WHY would he pick a ’suck to the max’ producer instead? And WHY would a completely AMAZING artist such as Common, with the genius albums  ‘Be’ (2005) and ‘Finding Forever’ (2007) behind him, start releasing crappy tunes? The world just didn’t make sense to me no more. So I bought the album anyway.

As I made my way home from Polyester Records, looking at the fresh hip-hopish cover, I was fearful of being disappointed. But as soon as I heard the new beats and lyrics all my worries were eased. And I can only say one thing: Never ever EVER let anyone tell you what sucks to the max. Make your own opinion.

Universal Mind Control ROCKS! Common ROCKS. His new producer ROCKS. This IS the new shit.

(oh by the way don’t listen to me!.. buy the album and agree or disagree… that’s Common Sense, aight!)
