You know when you have one of those weeks where NOTHING will go right for you: housemates hate you for being lazy, electric doors won’t open for you because you’re too short, police arrive and tell you to stop playing drums because of a pompous idiot of a neighbour who thinks Lygon St is Ramsay St or Summer Bay…I was having one of those weeks until i looked in my mailbox and found this slaying package.
The Diamond Sea are a local Melbourne band and have been playing up a storm across town for quite a while now and if you haven’t been to see them play or picked up a copy of the Slow Signal EP, quite frankly, you’re a moron.
Guitars weaved and danced about each other in some kind of angular waltz, leaving me in some daydream state tapping away on my knees to the drums looking up at the clouds singing in the sun. With past members of bands like Terror Firma, Schifosi, Masstrauma, and Majorca, I can see why all the kids are talking about the Diamond Sea at little lunch. Personally I find this band one of the most exciting things amongst the Melbourne music community at the moment.
Fave tracks would have to be slow signal and lock and key. With lyrics like ‘took one step forward and two steps back and an outline faintly formed’ I think I wee’d a little from excitement and got goosebumps from the excellence. Combine this with the drool marks I left on the insert which has the best fucking drawing (by Steph Cola) of a lion I have seen since i don’t know when.
Do yourself a favour and see these kids play, buy the ep and support a great local band.
