[Design Stuff] Zine and not heard

Blame it on the resurgence of the DIY aesthetic, but I have recently become obsessed with zines. In my defense, I’m spending my hard earned scratch on art zines as opposed to single page hand-written editions of gabba gabba hey.

More correctly I should probably say independent magazines. The possibilities for self publishing are no longer limited to scissors, glue-sticks and all-night copy shops. These days talented guys and gals are putting together publications in all shapes and forms. From cut and paste photocopied booklets to online only magazines to hand silk screened books. And they’re sucking away all my money. Here just a few of my favs, feel free to chuck yours in the comments.

Sticks & Stones:
Initially an online publication run by Robert Loeber, the sticks team are making the jump to print. Check out issues 1 and 2 here and keep an eye out for the print version of issue 3 on the blog.

Untitled- a magazine:
Primarily photographic, untitled is like a fashion mag that’s been scribbled all over by your mates. Well, more like Mike Perry and his mates. Printed in limited, numbered editions. Check it out here.

The Wizard’s Hat:
An illustration collective as well as a zine, The Wizard’s Hat is packed with trippy patterns and doodles. And issue 3 comes with a music CD. Buy it here.

Little Paper Planes:
Technically speaking Little Paper Planes is a store, not a magazine. A store that wants all my money. Featuring zines and self-published and short-run books from Andy Smith, Craig Atkinson, Deth P Sun and Mike Perry. Spend your cash here.

  1. Check out http://www.fudgefactorycomics.com, it’s a DIY art zine printed on archival paper with the old school gocco printing system. Amazing limited edition zines made by L.A based artists Travis Millard and his partner Mel Kadel. Both artists have an amazing skill when it comes to ink drawings. (Keep an eye out for a featured artist article I’m working on for WMSG on Travis Millard.)

They don’t make gocco printing machines anymore but the method is really simple and kicks ass, check it out.
