I’ve just returned from Sydney’s Semi Permanent’09 I can’t say anything else than Melbourne guys rock my world. Especially this one; Timba Smits -the creator of the absolutely amazing Wooden Toy magazine and one of the founders of Gorker Gallery.
I have always been drawn to graphic design, fonts and everything that comes with it. Obsessed! But after listening to Timba I can now declare myself mentally addicted. “Wooden Toy” is without a doubt the coolest, most beautifully designed underground magazine in Australia I have yet seen. If I get the chance to meet the talented Timba one day, I’ll give him a high five and plead him to launch his crazy magazine in Copenhagen, where soon I will give We Make Stuff Good that Scandinavian twist.
If I can’t get him to sell it in Denmark, I will make my Australian mates send me a copy every time he launches a new edition - ‘cuz I’m addicted. And it’s not fun to be an addict if you can’t get the shit you crave!
Lucky enough he is setting up an exhibition for Wooden Toy no.6 called Handmade Edition. We had a sneak peak at the semi permanent conference and as Timba Smits said himself: “this is the best edition so far”. Everything is drawn by hand, even tiny small letters on petite, hand drawn wooden signs.
The 6th edition of Wooden Toy features a huge amount of Australian designers as well as international ones. Acorn (CA), Michael Perry (USA), Cat Rabbit, Ghost Patrol, Nior, Santha King, Lilly Piri, Timba himself and so many, many more. If you haven’t seen the flier yet, take a walk to the wild side (Fitzroy) and grab it from Gorker Gallery or in any other cool shop/ cafe on your way.
The exhibition is on at Gorker gallery with opening night on April 9th 6pm-9pm.
Come support the man and his mag and get your own edition of Wooden Toy. Then keep it close to your other magazines on the shelf to begin with. Eventually it will find it’s way from the shelf into your heart, cause beautiful things like this always do.
Join my addiction. Come on. It’s not dangerous. It’s good for you.
What: Launch of 6th edition of Wooden Toy Handmade Edtn.
Where: Gorker Gallery, 395 Gore St. Fitzroy
When: Opening night April 9th. Exhibition runs until April 19th.
