Listen up all you hippity-hop fans, ‘cos Tony Silver’s Style Wars, the breaking 1983 documentary that followed the culture surrounding New York subway graffiti, break dancing and hip-hop through the late 70’s and early 80’s has hit the big screens at ACMI this weekend only.
Bringing subway battles between artists and civic guardians to the fore, Style Wars gives voice to some of New York’s legendary writers including Kase 2, Skeme, Seen UA, Cap and Dondi. A precursor to both Wild Style and Beat Street, Silver’s film is vivid, legendary and a rare big screen event.
