‘Everybody loves Obama’ should be the title of a new sit-com.
Across America and in the land of Oz the people are all about ‘Yes we can!’ Brett Ashby is one Aussie getting involved. We have been following Brett’s work for awhile, first noticing his interest for intricate patterns and making everyday images into something more poetic at ‘Each Sold Separately’, held at the State Library of Victoria…
In his latest exhibition Brett explores the mediums of photography and portraiture, adding his own personal narration to the image and creating a rich visual quality.
“The ‘Icons and Art’ exhibition references the presidential couple’s psychic influence on International Artists; allowing its 26 participants to express their feelings on such issues as Race, Politics and War through iconic Obama work. For Ashby, this exhibition will provide a sense of closure, having recently returned to Australia after photographing and presenting his work across the Southern States of America. Ashby stated “the opportunity to exhibit in ‘Icons and Art’ is tremendously exciting. For this particular piece, the United States was always my target audience.” Ashby’s inspiration for this piece, titled simply ‘Barack Obama’ evolved from the media hype surrounding the President’s inauguration. Anticipating Obama’s election as the 44th President, Ashby set about his innovative portrayal of America; representing the essence of the United States through an acute eye and attention to detail. The result proving as unique as the first African-American President himself.”- J. Lucas Gallery
