Iceland is now the first country worldwide to have McDonalds, the internationally recognised symbol of globalisation, evacuate the country.

Last week it was decided that Iceland’s three McDonalds stores, located in the capital of Reykjavík, would shut down. McDonald’s flee from the country comes after their struggle to regain profits following the collapse of the Icelandic krona (local currency) last year. Since the heavy fall of Iceland’s economy, costs for the company have more than doubled as they continued to import stock from Germany rather than use local products.

It would appear that the crash of the nation’s economy has led the population to prioritise what they spend their money on–judiciously McDonald’s doesn’t seem to be too high on their ol’ list of priorities.
