David Shillinglaw comes from England and can paint like a mother bitch. He was kind enough to answer some questions despite having two exhibitions, preparing  for another exhibition in Japan and yawn you know putting the finishing touches on a book which is soon to be released. I find it hard to believe this guy sleeps…
1.Who is David Shillinglaw and what does he do?
He is me, and right now I am answering this question from you.
He is an artist by day and fights crimes by night.
2.Art Education?
I have a degree in Fine Art. I feel the best lessons I’ve learnt in life have been self taught. I graduated in 2004, I think, and I have continued learning ever since.
3.Your paintings give the viewer a lot of visual content to look at–both from the painting itself and found objects you meld in–describe the process of painting a piece.
I collect things all the time and my studio is full of objects and surfaces to use. The works tend to effect each other, paintings become the triggers for new paintings, I kind of think of painting in my studio is like pollination, like how a bee moves from flower to flower, collecting ideas along the way, and unknowingly bringing the separate parts together. Sometimes when the studio gets a bit messy I like to work on a larger clean wall space to allow one particular piece to breathe.4.You’re stuck for inspiration, you’ve been drawing and painting all day in your studio but you’re still not happy with any of it…what do you do?
Any number of things, distraction breeds creation. I rarely like to leave my studio, and besides I live there too so I rarely do. It is good to take breaks, I eat, or go out, or have fun (however you define having fun) and always listen to music. To escape I usually play very loud music and find someone to dance with.

5.Tell me about your current exhibition ‘Get up an Antenna’, it’s in two locations how does that work?
The show is in a great place called Macondo, named after the town in the novel 100 years of Solitude, which is also one of my favourite reads. The gallery is also an amazing cocktail bar, and has 2 locations, not too far from each other. This is my second show there, and I love the attitude of the people who run the place, and the coffee they make is some of the best in London. The title ’Get up an Antenna’ is taken from a Jack Kerouac poem, you can see a whole bunch of photos here.

6.Do you sleep at all? You have another exhibition coming up in Japan, are you showing different stuff or the same works that are in your current exhibition? Tell us about this exhibition as well.
It’s funny, I don’t sleep very much, I love to sleep, I just find it so hard to switch off.  It’s an ongoing struggle for me but I manage to get a lot of work done. The show in Japan is happening in March 2010 in Nara. A good friend of mine who runs a design studio called ‘Head Space’ has organised it. The show will be more of a residency, so I’ll be there for a few weeks making work in response to the place and people and cultural exchange. I love to travel and love making work while I travel, and I have never been to Japan. I may take a few pieces with me, but it will be all new work. I made a residency in China a few years ago, and you can check that out here to give you an idea of what I get up to.
7.A word of advice for emerging artists?
Relentlessness.
8.Materials?
Wood, paper, paint (all kinds, but the quick drying kinds work for me the best), pens, inks, found materials, canvas, tip-ex, glue, coloured pencils, Posca, the list goes on…  I enjoy working with what I have so sometimes, it’s nice to limit myself with my materials and my pallet – that way the process is still interesting and spontaneous. I have to make decisions and solve problems with what’s available at that point in time, rather than planning or preparing too much.
9.Music. What have you been listening to lately?
I listen to a lot of music and recently I fixed my record deck so I am redicovering loads of old vinyl. Old Blues like John Lee Hooker, classic stuff like Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Etta James, Nina Simone, The Stones, The Beatles, and The Kinks. Recent stuff I’m into:  Feist, Wilco, The Cold War Kids, Tv On the Radio, Fleet Foxes, Jamie T, The Wu Tang Clan, Devendra Banhart, The Bees… Anything with soul usually works for me.

10.Innit?
Issit?
