Although the Pirate Bay’s well publicised trial ended over a year ago, copyright is still a hot social and political issue. Many government’s around the world are scrambling to implement laws that prohibit the distribution of ‘illegal’ media over the internet. Australia is leading the way by bringing in what is essentially an internet censorship plan – not dissimilar to the current systems already in place in countries such as China, Iran and Saudi Arabia. RiP!: A Remix Manifesto is the world’s first ‘open source’ documentary that tackles the issue of censorship and remix culture. It features some of the leading educators and artists whose work-life is directly affected by issues related to copyright. Created over a period of six years, RiP! features the collaborative works of hundreds of members of the Open Source Cinema project whose work lies under the Creative Commons license. This gives the viewers of RiP! the right to take the film, remix it and then use it in their own personal work. This is exactly what people have done. Remixes of the original cut have since been edited into the final version of the film.
If you’re into DJ’ing, remixing video or care about your personal freedom in relation to copyright then this film is worth a watch.
