This Wednesday at the WMSG Gallery a new exhibition curated by Sebastian Grünberg will open. The name and theme is ‘OHNMACHT’. What that means exactly, I’m still investigating. After seeking council with every German person I know I discovered the translation is not so easily converted into English. So far I have been told it means “Black Out” which I would relate to a power falure, “Pass Out” which I guess would be fainting, and “Powerlessness” which I don’t even think is a word. Thanks to Google Translate for that last one. One friend in particular had an amusing way of describing it to me; “It’s like if I see a hot girl yeah, and she is so nice I fall.” Ok so now I’m really confused, but read on for a hopeful conclusion.
Expect to see photography, stencils, and paintings by Alias, DDG, Elizabeth Rhone, Patrick Plüquett and Sebastian Grünberg. The topics tend themselves to despair, depression, political satire and the creation of the atomic bomb. So not the lightest of topics, but well deserving of some attention in this modern monsoon. So even if I never figured out exactly what “OHNMACHT” meant, I am now sure it has nothing to do with fainting over hot chicks.
