If you’re walking down St Marks somewhere in the east village of New York, you might stumble past a little store where the seats are for ‘fat girls only ‘ blacks or jews. James Dela Vega has become famous in a post 9/11 New York  where he started spreading positive mesaages on walls around the city like ‘become your dream’ – a motto that inspired me at the start of my Americas adventure last year, so much so that I had it tattooed in Spanish whilst in Mexico City at the end of my journey. James, with his Spanish Harlem flair and his own style of graffiti murals, has joined other great street artists like Basquat.  James Dela Vega is more than just a man he is an artist, photographer and philosopher.

  2. Thankyou. Actually my tattoo is not quite finished.. It was a sper-of-the-moment thing. I had a few hours left in Mexico City and i was thinking about everything that had happened..so i ran down to a tattooist with a Mexican student i met at the Hostel and got Viva Tus Seuenos written on my arm.

About The Author: Poppy Calhoun

I love portraiture and documentary photography. I keep telling myself I will have time to work on more personal art projects one day. Currently I’m working on a series of portraits for the We Make Stuff Good crew, which is coming soon, I promise Krystal! The documentation of Melbourne street art – in particular Sketch City and Don't Ban the Can – are a continuous and inspiring projects. I am also starting to shoot portraits for bands and personalities. Keep a look out for Simon Write & the Ecclective, and those crazy graph kids Juzzo and Spud Roc.

We are a Melbourne based company who have embraced our city's vibrant arts culture. Our site is comprised of artists, designers, musicians and writers who document cultural events and how to get in to it.
