Bewilderbeast is a name associated with bruised shins and happy faces around Melbourne. Their layered beats seem to find a limb on even the most rigid body– forcing them into involuntary bone boogies.
At The Espy’s ‘Rock for Relief’ gig they transformed the empty dance floor into a good-vibed stampede of party people. And that’s why we love ‘em, Bewilderbeast can change the whole atmosphere of a space, of a festival, and bring people together to let loose and have fun. With their communal-style of performance it can be tricky to tell who’s band, who’s crowd at their gigs. We caught up with singer/ synth/ beatboxer Simon the other day to find out when we get to hear their new stuff…
In the daydreams of a Bewilderbeast… the lounge room would be stuck on the roof and the roads would be trampolines where we could double bounce strangers.
How would you describe your style? Fun hip hop party-core.
If you had to make musical babies with someone who would it be? Tiny Tim.
What vegetable best represents your band? I’m not sure if it relates to the question but I just love avocado…
Lately Bewilderbeast have been… having bursts of writing explosions that have been really exciting for the whole band. The EP that’s coming out later in the year is going to be really fun.
There’s 6 in the band how does it go all working together & writing material? Because we’ve been friends longer than we’ve been in a band together there’s much more of a personal connection with each other and we’re all really open minded with each other’s influences and output.
Also, each person in the band loosely has a certain role: Shaun has really good ideas with structure, Javed is an amazing composer, where Daniel is really good with the mathematics towards music and sample manipulation, Tom is awesome at incorporating the audience and making the songs catchy and Adam is really quick with word play and writing.
And you? I love playing with melody and vocal rhythms.
And finally, “how do I know that I know what I know do I know that I know what I know?” I don’t think I’ll ever know what I know because what I know isn’t for certain.
Get along to see Bewilderbeast before they hit the festival circuit and spread their wings…
