Everyone loves a good old fashioned Sunday session at their local pub, and when there’s cheap beer, free food and wholesome music on offer who wouldn’t pop along, even if it isn’t your local.
The Bendigo Hotel on Johnson St will open up its doors every Sunday for an afternoon of music, snags and beer! Starting on Sunday 14 March from 1pm the BBQ will be fired up in the sunny beer garden with a selection of tasty FREE treats (catering for meat lovers and vegos) and $10 jugs of beer! A number of local musos will kick the day off from 4pm in true Sunday fashion, with sounds ranging from blues, folk, reggae to bluegrass…

Yakks was born out of frustration, hostility towards the general public, and the mundane 9 to 5 life that was evaporating any form of creative juice attempting to flow.
Annoyed with the amount of garage bands and club music that was being played in Melbourne at the time, Yakks started jamming. In a bedroom where the roof was caving in and the cracks in the walls were so wide you could see outside, they stripped sound back to the basics, turned up the amp and bloody reverberated the crumbling plaster onto the floor, which had a rodent hole, but no cracks.
Encouraged by the late Jay Reatard to “just do it! just go crazy!”, synth player and vocalist Ezzy quit his day job as a screen printer and opted for a more scummy lifestyle of less is more. Drawing influences from bands such as Lost Sounds, Destruction Unit and The Screamers, Yakks began playing stripped down synth-based punk music, touching on subjects such as hardship, disease, the human condition and misunderstandings of everyday life.
Taking it to the streets mid 2009, Yakks have played alongside some of Melbourne’s greatest bands to be associated with the independent music scene, taken part in festival appearances – receiving positive feedback from both press and fans alike.
The bands current self-released cd-r is a 3 song demo, titled ‘The Dawn Fraser Demos’. Inspired by a Dawn Fraser look-alike who roams the streets and tram lines of Brunswick, gold medal around her neck and all.
The cd-r can be purchased from the band, vox-cyclops Records (Newcastle, NSW) and Missing Link Records in Melbourne, with more stores taking on the cd in the coming weeks.
Check out what all the stink is about by visiting the band’s blog and MySpace.

S.L.A.M (Save Live Australia’s Music) has organised a protest in both support and celebration of Victoria’s music scene. The strong independent and thriving music culture, renowned worldwide, is currently being severely threatened by unfair constraints being enforced upon venue owners. The long term aim of the idiotic laws is to reduce the number of Liquor Licenses in Victoria by making it too difficult or expensive for smaller venues to afford one. The end result will mean that there will be less small venues and more larger venues. S.L.A.M will play an integral role in attempting to voice the dismay and concern of music lovers and creators alike.
Show your support for this precious industry by taking part on this important day, make a placard, bring ya instruments and chant down these ridiculous laws!
Coinciding with the 34th anniversary of AC/DC’s famous ‘It’s A Long Way To The Top’ film clip shoot down Swanston St, The RocKwiz Orchestra shall be leading the rally, with guest performers, repeating the three chords from ‘It’s A Long Way to the Top’ in the back of a Flat Bed Truck.
Who: S.L.A.M
What: Rally / Party to protest against new Liquor Licensing Laws.
When: 23 February @ 4pm, guest speakers from 6-7pm.
Where: Starts at the State Library, then moves along Swanston St, upto Bourke St then to Parliament House in Spring St.

As part of the Berlin Film Festival Berlinale, a private showing of Exit Through The Gift Shop was screened last night at Potsdamer Platz. As you may have heard, the film is presented by the infamous and un-recognisable Banksy. I was lucky enough to be invited along to the Berlin premiere and besides falling over on the red carpet, I had an otherwise safe experience.
