Good Stuff

One of my favourite discoveries of 2009 was artist David Shillinglaw. He was kind enough to send me a copy of his latest zine titled No King Hungry Spirit. No King Hungry Spirit claims to be full of ‘extracts from a novel no one will ever read’ but I find myself going back to this zine time and time again because of the contrast between simplicity and complexity.
Drawings mostly grace these photocopied pages with the exception of a peacock feather and some 35mm negatives of hand guns next to a splatter of paint, a zine definitely worth picking up. Head over to David Shillinglaw’s webpage to see the other zines he’s created along with some awesome paintings that he has for sale. A win-win in my book.

Kiri Joyce is a singer / songwriter / keyboardist with bite, her raw lyrics are delivered with a voice that is plunged from her soul and melts your insides like butter. Both times I have seen her I have left feeling touched by the way in which she lays her heart and soul onto the stage, knowing it won’t be long till I see her play again. The lovely Wesley Ann in Northcote provides the perfect red velvet, cosy backdrop to experience such a truly beautiful, original performance.

A friend of We Make Stuff Good has just opened her very own vinyl craft store called De Vinyl. The store’s got great stuff for prettying up your blank and lonely walls with a mix of pop culture favourites like space invaders, dancing keyboard girls and red riding hood being eaten by the big bad wolf.
All the products are made in Australia and are super share house friendly as they come off easily and can be restuck and a later time.

Few comics show true insight into life. They can be funny, morbid, cruel, delightful, and insightful, but unlike this one, few pull all this off with the added bonus of grace and beauty. What is this wonderful thing I speak of? Its called A Softer World and if you haven’t seen it before, well, let’s just say you aren’t invited to brunch. Written and photographed by Emily Horne and Joey Comeau, A Softer World will make you cry, kick you and then take you out for drinks and karaoke.

In the word’s of Chubby Checker, “come-on let’s twist again like we did last summer, let’s twist again like we did last yeeear! Do you remember when, things were really hummin’, come-on let’s twist again, coz twistin’ time is here!!!”
As the festival season sweeps us across the country to experience music, people and life as it should be. We ring around for tents, tickets, gumboots and that next hit of go-go. In the midst of the summer frenzy the WMSG crew take a minute to remember how it was last year, what we’ve forgotten, and to relive those amazing moments that deserve to be flowing through the cerebal pipes again…

Those who know me well know that I’m a massive fan of the music by James Mercer from The Shins. I love his deep and cryptic lyrics, his alternative melodies and feel good bopping rhythms. I was glad to hear that James Mercer recently teamed up with musician and producer Danger Mouse and what came out was a project called Broken Bells.

Ok, so some of you who are patrons of our fair WMSG site may have noticed that every now-and-again an article about zombies pops up. This is because we believe in equal rights between all races, including the dead. In the spirit of equality we encourage you to go and see the movie Zombieland, which is a more realistic look at what would actually happen if a zombie virus were to break out across (where else?) America.
It’s out now. Don’t waste your money on that bollocky wank shite Twilight. Go and see something that is supposed to be funny, instead of something that is funny because it is crap. And in case you aren’t convinced, just letting you know there is an amazing Bill ‘Muthfuckin’ Murray cameo. DO IT OR I WILL EAT YOUR BRAINZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
